The WIPO Digital Access Service (DAS) is an electronic system allowing priority documents and similar documents to be securely exchanged between participating intellectual property (IP) offices. This will allow IPONZ to retrieve priority documents from a central source without needing patent applicants to supply their own copies. IPONZ will also be able to supply patent documents to WIPO DAS on request, which removes the need to provide these as certified copies for applicants’ use. More details on IPONZ’s WIPO DAS implementation will be released after its start date.

Overall, in music sales, €57 million were lost in physical formats (e.g. CDs) and €113 million in digital formats. This was equivalent to 2.9 % of all music sales in physical formats and 8.8 % of all music sales in digital formats. The study, issued by the EUIPO through the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, analyses the recording industry's direct sales of music products to domestic retailers or intermediaries. It does not include sales by music distributors, like online platforms, or retailers. The EUIPO's Executive Director, António Campinos, said:
The question of whether piracy reduces or increases sales of recorded music has been the subject of many studies with contradictory results. Our study's results are in line with the prevailing consensus and find that piracy reduces the revenue of legitimate industry in both digital and physical formats. The study is based on data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents recording and music licensing companies worldwide. It analyses sales data from the 19 EU Member States where 99 % of all such EU sales took place in 2014. Germany

WIPO system issues affecting Madrid trade mark applications and related opposition proceedings
  • Examine Madrid trade mark applications sent by IPONZ; and
  • Serve IPONZ notices of provisional refusal based on opposition to rights holders.
This has resulted in delays in WIPO receiving Madrid trade mark applications from IPONZ, and affected the ability of rights holders to respond to IPONZ notices of provisional refusal based on opposition within the prescribed period. IPONZ has taken remedial action to minimise the impact of these issues for clients.
